Would you like healthy eggs that you can call your own?
Many of you have been purchasing locally-harvested eggs from Coach Shana’s sister Heather. Heather is having a difficult time keeping up with the growing demand for her eggs.
We’re excited to announce a new partnership with Fairview Meadow Farms our local food farm. They will be building a chicken coup on our property in Rocky River for cultivating organic eggs. It will be located adjacent to the patio on the East side of the building, . The initial plan is for Fairview Meadow Farms to build a chicken coup with a capacity of housing 100 hens and overseeing the cultivation of eggs on a weekly basis. They will also provide sourcing for the hens. Shana’s sister Heather will own 48 laying hens, giving us the opportunity for our members to own the remaining 52 hens.
If you are interested in owning several hens housed in our new facility, please let us know. We’ll need payment, choice of breed and names for your hens. We have a choice between Leghorn hens which lay white eggs and Rhode Island Red hens which lay brown eggs. Hens typically lay 6 eggs per week and cost $8.50 each. Fairview Meadow Farms will raise each hen from a chick at their farm in Wellington and transport them to our coup at 8 weeks of age. They will be complete the construction of the coup and fenced in grazing area during those 8 weeks. We should be able to have everything completed and begin harvesting our own eggs by the first or second week in June.
Since the hens will have a fenced in area to graze every day, each hen will be identified by a tag stamped with a unique name you choose. Please include the names with your order.
If you want to participate, here’s what you need to do.
1) Bring in a check made out to Fairview Meadow Farms, $8.50 per hen
2) Indicate “Leghorn” or “Rhode Island Red” in the memo section on your check
3) Include a name for each of your hens. You can post them in a comment here and we’ll pass the info along
We already have orders for 18 hens from our coaches and have room for only 34 more, so act quickly to reserve yours.
Here are the names already chosen. Don’t worry about picking a duplicate name, your last name can be included on the tags.
Staci (4) – Trixie, Pecker, Andora & Goldie Hen
Shana (3) – Fluffy, Peckington & Hennie
Courtney (3) – Drumstick, Maude & Henrietta
Courtney’s Mom (4) – Fonzie, Potsie, Bonnie & Clyde
Tony C (4) – Rocky, Bullwinkle, Eddie & Deliahla
Fairview Meadow Farms will be doing the construction and ongoing work – obtaining proper permits, maintaining the coup and packaging the eggs on a weekly basis. There is a secure area in the coup for you to retrieve your filled egg cartons every Monday. They will be keeping two eggs per week from each hen as their fee. They will also earn money by selling the manure produced by the hens. Apparently there is pretty good money in chicken shit. Don’t wait, we expect to sell out of capacity before the weekend.
If this works out well, Fairview Meadow Farms said they can build us a large pig pen on the east end of our property for producing humanely-raised pork products. We can all be in the bacon business 😉 That might be a bit tricky with Rocky River zoning, but they said they’s try. More details to follow.
Thanks!
